Conference and Research Grants

Eligibility
Faculty are encouraged to seek supplementary support from their home departments and other units on campus in conjunction with funding requests made to the Institute. Proposed activities must be related to Asia and aligned with the Institute’s mission. Awards are a maximum of $3,000.
Guidelines
Please submit the required documents in a single PDF via the online application form.
- A brief proposal (3 pages maximum) stating the project goals, research plan, budget, and the fit of the project within Asian studies and/or interaction with partners in Asia
- A budget with a detailed explanation of budget items (download budget XLSX template here)
- Abbreviated CV (2 pages)
- Potential funding sources other than the Liu Institute and the amount requested from those sources
Evaluation
The Institute's Grant Review Committee evaluates proposals and recommends selected grants to the director for approval. Funding is awarded based on the quality of the proposal, the relevance of the activity to the mission of the Institute, and budgetary appropriateness. Applicants who have recently received Liu funding are eligible to reapply, but must list prior Liu grants and comment briefly on the benefits that have resulted. Applicants who have recently been awarded Liu funding must also demonstrate a significant need for additional funding.

Course Development Funding

Funding is available to encourage the development of courses that have Asia, a specific Asian country/region, or Asia-related topics as the primary organizing structure and theme. Materials grants can be used for teaching materials, supplementary travel, or research (e.g. books). Any course developed through this grant will be cross-listed in Asian Studies and must be offered at least twice in a two-year period by the faculty receiving the grant.
Deadline
Proposal submissions are accepted on a rolling basis until funding runs out.
Maximum award
$3,000 (Up to $5,000 is available for courses being planned and taught collaboratively by two or more scholars.)
Application Requirements
Please send the following to the Liu Institute at asia@nd.edu:
1. Proposal narrative of no more than 4 single-spaced pages, which should address:
- course focus
- perceived need for the course in Asian Studies
- teaching methods, including media and other resources to be used
- target student population and its prerequisite knowledge
- optimal class size and projected enrollment goals
- plans to advertise the course
- how the development of this course is beyond the normal scope of your responsibility as a faculty member

Speaker and Event Support

Deadline
The last day of the semester is the deadline for the corresponding term during the next academic year.
- December 7, 2023, for Fall 2024 events
- May 1, 2024, for Spring 2025 events
Faculty fellows interested in hosting a speaker or organizing an event are asked to complete the speaker/event nomination form for consideration.
Faculty are highly encouraged to seek supplementary support from their home departments and other units in conjunction with funding requests made to the Institute. The proposed speaker’s expertise must be related to Asia and aligned with the Institute’s mission.
Requests should be submitted 6-12 months in advance of the desired event. Speaker requests will be reviewed by the Director and an events committee. Support will be awarded based on relevance to the mission of the Institute, budgetary appropriateness, and consideration of the overall event schedule.

Speaker Series
Faculty Fellows are encouraged to collaborate and propose a thematic speaker series over the course of an academic year. Past examples include:

- 2020-2021 series: Global Fragility and Pandemic: Insight from Asia and Notre Dame
- 2021-2022 series: Asian (Re)Visions of Nation, State, and Citizenship
- 2022-2023 series: Border Crossings in Asian Humanities
