On Friday, October 12, Professor Michel Hockx, founding director of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies at the University of Notre Dame, will give a talk titled "From Sinology to Global Affairs: The Study of China in the USA" at the Notre Dame Beijing Global Gateway. The lecture will provide a broad overview of trends in Chinese Studies in the USA from the 1950s to the present. Three trends will be discussed in detail: the “sinological” approach, the “cold war” approach, and the “global affairs” approach.

Prof. Hockx’s career in Chinese Studies spans more than three decades, during which he has taught and researched Chinese literature and culture at universities in the USA, Europe, and China. He is former director of the China Institute at SOAS, University of London, as well as former director of the London Confucius Institute.
