The Asian Indian Classical Music Society present a concert by Rajeeb Chakraborty, Jesse Bannister, and Pandit Subhen.
Rajeeb Chakrabarty is one of India’s finest sarod players. He started his training at the age of six under the guidance of his father, Pt (Pandit) Rabi Charaborty, the distinguished sarodist of the Maihar gharana. He has also trained under Pt. Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta and Pt. Ajoy Charaborty. In addition to being a scholar and teacher of Indian classical music, he has received degrees in western classical music from the Royal College of Music in London. He has received numerous awards, performed widely in Europe and North America and has been associated with numerous universities, including Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and Manchester.
Jesse Bannister is one of UK's leading saxophonists. His mother is from India and his father is English. He studied jazz music at the Leeds College of Music. During the course of his studies he became interested in Indian classical music, studying with Dharamvir Singh, UK’s renowned sitarist and a disciple of the legendary Pandit Vilayat Khan. He has also studied with the renowned vocalists Pts..Rajan and Sajan Mishra and Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty. He teaches at the Leeds College of Music and performs internationally.
Subhen Chatterjee, one of India’s leading tabla players, bases his style of playing to Lucknow Gharana, having trained under the maestro Pt. Swapan Chowdhury. Not restricting himself to one single Gharana, he has studied the intricacies and beauty of other traditions, which has made his style of playing unique and distinctive. He has performed widely in India and abroad, including at Notre Dame on numerous occasions. He has accompanied many legendary musicians, including Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Smt. Girija Devi, Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Rajan & Sajan Misra, Ustad Rashid Khan, and Ustad Shahid Parvez.
