Caleb "C.J." Pine, an Arabic and Peace Studies major with a minor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics was named valedictorian of the 2017 University of Notre Dame graduating class and presented the valedictory address during the 172nd University Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Notre Dame Stadium. A Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar and a member of the Glynn Family Honors Program, Pine grew up in Tianjin, China, where he witnessed the challenges facing Muslim ethnic minorities in a secular Chinese state. Pine was named a Truman scholar in 2016.
