Call for Proposals: “Justice and Asia” Collaborative Grants

Author: Liu Institute

DEADLINE EXTENSION: January 15, 2019

The Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies seeks to fund short-term projects on the theme of “Justice and Asia.” This theme is part of the Institute’s priority focus and seeks to leverage the diverse expertise and approaches in our community through an open call for proposals (CFP).

“Justice and Asia” in this first round of funding will focus on quickly moving, robust projects. Proposals can be submitted by any member of the community (faculty fellows, students, groups, etc.). Proposal for projects that involve students (as researchers or collaborators) will be given priority, though it is not a requirement.

The theme of justice is understood here as a dynamic, inclusively defined concept. Conventional modes of justice, such as those explored through law and morality, are certainly welcome. Novel approaches that seek to question or expand the term or its practice are also encouraged, for instance, through comparative, multidisciplinary, or other perspectives and approaches.

Awards of up to $5,000 will be provided to selected project proposals. Recipients should plan to present completed projects or significant progress to date at the launch of the Liu Institute's Strategic Plan in mid-March, 2019.

All proposals should have Asia at their center; priority is given to proposals that encourage meaningful collaboration between Liu faculty fellows and student(s). Proposals must include the following:

  1. A short abstract indicating the scope of the project (≤ 200 words)
  1. A project proposal that incorporates:
  • Clearly defined deliverable(s)
  • Significance of the project
  • Methods
  • Work plan and timeframe
  • Collaborators (local and global)
  • Barriers and challenges
  • Alignment with the Liu Institute theme of "Justice in Asia"
  1. Budget (formatted into a spreadsheet); if applicable please indicate other funding sources

Final proposals are due: January 15, 2019
