Haiyan Lee, a professor of East Asian languages and cultures and comparative literature at Stanford University, delivered the Liu Institute's first Justice and Asia Distinguished Lecture on April 19, 2021. Professor Lee's lecture, "A Murder in Manchuria" examined justice through the1956 film The Murder Case of Xu Qiuying to illustrate the distinctions between spy thriller and detective fiction and between "high justice" and "low justice" in the Chinese literary and political-legal traditions.
