The Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies congratulates our 2018 Asian studies graduates.

Jeremy Cappello Lee, a philosophy major, is earning a supplementary major in Asian studies. Karen Chen, a biology major, is earning an Asian studies minor. Amelia Wittig (not shown), a political science major, is earning a supplementary major in Asian studies.

For the first time, the Liu Institute is honoring our graduates with customized stoles that were handmade by Chain Reaction, an NGO in Guizhou, China. Through the Guizhou Rural Tourism Development Center, Chain Reaction promotes traditional handicrafts such as embroidery, weaving, and printing by training village women to learn and practice these skills.

The Liu Institute has sponsored students who work over the summer at Chain Reaction through the Center for Social Concerns’ International Summer Service Learning Program (ISSP). In fact, Notre Dame students who worked at Chain Reaction organized the production of the graduation stoles.

It’s exciting to see our graduates wearing these pieces of art that are not only beautiful, but also meaningful to our students and our Institute.

Again, congratulations!
