Lecture by Dr. Weiyang Xie, Staff Psychologist, University Counseling Center
Asian Americans are perceived as a uniformly well-educated racial group with high professional success rates. Young Asian Americans are usually assumed by their peers to be exemplary high achievers with few or even no psychological challenges due to stereotypes of Asian Americans as excelling academically while not exhibiting many emotions. However, Asian American students have higher rates of suicidal thoughts and other mental health problems. Asian Americans are among the least likely of all racial groups to utilize mental health services.
This presentation will discuss the unique individual, familial, cultural and societal factors that are related to Asian American youths and young adults’ mental health, and explore multi-tiered interventions to destigmatize mental health issues and increase mental health literacy in the Asian American community.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Weiyang Xie obtained her master’s degree and Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Minnesota. She joined Notre Dame as a staff psychologist in 2015. She recently won a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to improve mental health in Asian immigrant families.
