Based on the speaker’s ethnographic research in China’s Gansu Province, this lecture will explore the themes of identity and solidarity as they apply to Chinese Muslims. The primary question to be discussed is the relative degrees to which members of Muslim ethnic minorities identify with their non-Muslim compatriots as compared to their non-Chinese coreligionists. Weaving together both historical and contemporary examples, the lecture hopes to illustrate the diversity of answers given by Chinese Muslims as to where they feel a sense of belonging.
