The Liu Institute Asia Working Group presents Dr. YANG Xiaoneng.
Dr. Yang (Stanford) will present his research "Splendid Chinese Art in Western Museums." Chinese collections in Western art museums are among the best in the world. They are equally important to those collections in China. Although a century of archaeological excavation has revealed numerous works containing rich historical information and the highest artistic achievements, many significant works in Western collections are still indispensable for the study of China’s past. To fully understand Chinese material culture, it is essential to review Chinese collections in the West. This lecture offers an in-depth survey and discussion of the scope, quality, and development of the most representative Western museum collections.

Dr. Yang, Consulting Professor for the Center of East Asian Studies at Stanford University and a member of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, specializes in Chinese archaeology, art history, and museum studies. His research and exhibitions range from subjects related to archeological discoveries through 20th century art. His recent publications include The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology; New Perspectives on China’s Past; Reflections of Early China; Tracing the Past, Drawing the Future; and Hello, Shanghai.
