In this talk, Xiao-Ping Chen will first provide a brief review of the history of Chinese private businesses and the hostile business environment in which the business leaders operate, struggle, survive, and succeed. Chen will then describe the 13 business leaders we interviewed, and the insights we gained through the content analyses of the interviews. Finally Chen  will share the concentric leadership model we proposed, which explains the main reasons behind each of the 13 successful stories.

Xiao-Ping Chen is the Philip M. Condit Endowed Chair Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs in the Michael G. Foster School of Business, University of Washington. She is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, has served as Editor-in-Chief for Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes (2010-2016) and is currently the Editor-in-Chief for Management Insights, a bilingual (Chinese and English) magazine for business educators and practitioners. Professor Chen’s research interests include social dilemmas, teamwork and leadership, entrepreneur passion, Chinese guanxi, and cross-cultural communication and management. Professor Chen has served as the second President for International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR). In addition to the Leadership of Chinese Private Enterprises: Insights and Interviews, she has published nine Chinese books, among which the Empirical Methods in Organization and Management Research book has been the best seller in China since 2008.
